11 gauge steel pins that go through fabric and stay put.
Galvanised 20 cm staples in packs of 50. For weed fabric, turf and anything the wind wants to move.
These are the heavy option for pinning things to the ground, and the one to choose when the nylon spikes are not enough.
11 gauge is 3 mm steel with sharp cut ends, which is what lets them go through woven weed barrier, plastic sheeting and heavy or stony soil without bending over.
At 20 cm they are long enough to hold against wind lift on fabric and turf, which is where short pins fail first.
Hot dipped galvanised rather than electroplated, so the zinc layer is thick enough that they come back out of the ground reusable rather than rusted solid.

Holding lightweight edging or fabric in soft, settled loam is a job for the nylon spiral spikes: nothing to rust and nothing to stain a path.

How are they different from the plastic edging spikes?
These are steel and go through heavy woven fabric and hard or stony ground. The nylon spikes will not rust or stain paving but will pull through heavy fabric under load.
Will they rust?
The hot dipped zinc coating is there to prevent it. Knock the soil off before storing them rather than leaving them wet in a shed.
Can I reuse them?
Yes, that is the point of the galvanising. They pull out clean and go back in.
How far apart should I space them?
Roughly every 50 cm along an edge and at every overlap seam, closer where the ground is exposed to wind.
Should I drive them straight down?
Angle them slightly away from the direction of pull. A vertical pin lifts; an angled one has to shear the soil to move.
Will they go through stony ground?
That is what the 3 mm gauge is for. A lighter pin folds over.
Do I need a mallet?
A mallet or a hammer helps in firm ground. In soft soil they push in by hand.
Are they safe around a mower?
Drive them fully home so nothing stands proud, and keep them back from the mowing line.
Can I use them to hold down a hose or cable?
Yes, that is a common use, though bury or cover the run so nothing is a trip hazard.
Will 50 be enough for my project?
At 50 cm spacing a pack covers about 25 metres of single edge. A two metre wide fabric run pinned on both edges uses about twice that.
